3 students and a suspect are dead after Michigan State University shooting

On the Michigan State University campus Monday night, a shooter opened fire, killing three students and injuring five others before turning the pistol on himself, according to authorities.

According to authorities, among those slain inside schools on Tuesday were Brian Fraser, a sophomore from Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and Alexandria Verner, a junior from Clawson, Michigan.

Out of respect for the desires of the family, the name of a third victim has not been disclosed, according to campus police. As of Tuesday morning, five pupils were still in the hospital and were in critical condition.

Anthony Dwayne McRae, 43, the suspect, was discovered deceased outside the campus in East Lansing, Michigan, from what seemed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to Chris Rozman, the temporary deputy head of the MSU police, investigations are underway, and as of Tuesday morning, authorities "certainly have no clue of a motivation."

According to authorities, the suspect sent a message threatening two public schools in New Jersey.

According to Rozman, the suspect was thought to be acting alone and was unrelated to the school. Tuesday morning, police carried out a search warrant at the suspect's home.

The shooter initially walked away from the scene. After almost three hours, the police tracked down McRae thanks to a tip from a local. When local law enforcement authorities met him, he looked to have shot himself.

Police in Ewing, New Jersey, said in a statement on Tuesday that they had found a note in McRae's pocket that included a threat against two Ewing public schools. Later, MSU police acknowledged that they had discovered a note on the suspect, but they would not reveal what was written on it.

According to Ewing police, McRae has links to the township, which is some 670 miles by automobile southeast of East Lansing.

Out of an abundance of caution, the local superintendent decided to close the public schools in Ewing on Tuesday. Classes will start up again on Wednesday.

All of the victims were students of the university

The College of Social Science is housed in Berkey Hall, where the shooting started on Monday at 8:18 p.m. ET. Two pupils were found deceased at the site by the responding cops.

Shortly after, there was a report of another gunshot at the MSU student union, which is right next door and serves as a hub for students. There was one student slain, according to Rozman. During regular business hours, the public is welcome to visit Berkey Hall and the student union building, according to the police.

Numerous agencies sent hundreds of cops to the area, according to the police. Victims were sent to Lansing's Sparrow Hospital.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, an independent data gathering group, Monday's shooting was the 67th so far in 2023. According to the organization, a mass shooting occurs when four or more individuals—excluding the shooter—are shot or killed. The organization estimates that in 2022, there were close to 650 mass shootings across the nation.

Legislators including East Lansing Mayor Ron Bacon, Rep. Elissa Slotkin, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer demanded a stop to gun violence during a news conference on Tuesday morning.

At least one kid who took refuge on the MSU campus on Tuesday was a survivor of the Oxford High School massacre, which took place in a nearby town in November 2021, according to local news sources.

"I can't believe I'm doing this again 15 months later as a representative of Oxford, Michigan. The fact that we need to have another news conference to discuss children being slain in their classrooms infuriates me "said Slotkin.

"You either care about safeguarding children or you don't, in my opinion. Either you value having frank discussions about the state of our society, or you don't."

The 17,000 college students who attend courses at MSU's East Lansing campus, as well as the teachers and staff, will get assistance, according to interim president Teresa Woodruff on Tuesday morning.

The loss of life has crushed us, and we wish to embrace every family affected by this tragedy, she added.
